Wentworth Samuel Holworthy (1812–1898) was born in Croxall, Derbyshire, in 1812, as the elder son of the Reverend Samuel Holworthy the Younger, an Anglican clergyman who served as the rector of Croxall, and his wife Diana Sarah, who was the daughter of the Jamaican plantation owner Nathaniel Bayly. Following his early education at Charterhouse School in London, Wentworth was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, on May 29, 1830, and matriculated in October 1830. During his time at Cambridge, he became a member of the elite intellectual secret society known as the Cambridge Apostles. His academic journey at the university spanned several years, involving readmissions as a pensioner in 1834 and 1841 before he ultimately earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1844. Alongside his university studies, he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on November 13, 1832.

Beyond his formal legal and academic pursuits, Holworthy engaged in intellectual writing, publishing a book titled "The Book of Reform" in 1832. Remaining a bachelor throughout his life, census records trace his living arrangements across various locations, showing him residing with family members or in lodgings. In 1851, he lived with the family of his cousin Charles Thomas Thruston in Wales, and by 1861, he was visiting the Oxfordshire home of the Reverend William Basil Jones and his sister Frances Holworthy. Later in life, the 1881 and 1891 census returns record him boarding or lodging in Westminster, London. Holworthy passed away in London in 1898.
